In Psalm 139 God emphasizes that He fashioned our days for us when “there was yet none of them”. How beautiful that He personally shaped the course of our lives, knowing our specific birthdate and day of death. Every moment in between, says the psalm, is inescapable from His presence. He was actively present in the womb forming us, so life is precisous to Him and not to be valued lightly.
With that in mind, I know this trip overseas is ordained in purpose beyond my military job. Shortly after Katy and I were married we were at Fort Knox, Kentucky, and I was a student at the Armor Officer’s Advanced Course. I remember returning to class from lunch and hearing the radio playing over the hallway intercom. The announcer was giving a news update and mentioned that President Bush spoke at the graduation for West Point. He went on to say how it rained and that every time it rained on graduation day at West Point, the nation went to war that year. I remember thinking, “Hmm…that’s an odd piece of trivia.” Then just a few months later came the attacks of 9/11 and immediately that newscast came back to mind.
Then on Mar 19, 2003, Katy gave birth to Stephen. Katy was resting in her bed while I was cradling Stephen when the TV was interrupted with footage of Shock and Awe beginning in Iraq. I kissed Stephen, just hours old, and said, ‘Welcome to world, little guy…you’re in for a wild ride’.
Someday I’ll owe him an answer on what I did about 9/11 and now I’m on the way to do my part to defeat those who ignore God’s Word and want to kill indiscriminately. It’s not idealism, about craving to be something I’m not, or about being naive. It’s about Psalm 139. God values life from conception to grave and those who take it are out of line. God knows how all this will unfold and I have confidence Stephen’s questions will be answered well as it does.
