Warning – Very Boring Post

As “Nosedives”, alluded to, the weather was really rough and dusty yesterday. Before leaving work, I cleaned my pistol really well, and then started on my laptop. It was getting pretty gross with all the sand and grit, and the touch pad wasn’t working too well from the dirt. But she’s as good as new now. o be safe, after chapel last night, I took the laptop to a more hospitable place.

We have a little trailer of a coffee shop, appropriately dubbed “Green Beans”, and it’s close enough to the hotspot that I can pick up the net there. I felt guilty about sucking down their conditioned air without partaking of their menu – something that I’ve intentionally avoided for the calories. So the right thing to do was to buy something to justify me being in there.

I ordered a mocha frappe…OK, I know you’re thinking, “yawn, this blog gets more boring by the syllable” but ya’ll it was the best cold drink I’ve ever had, bar none. Holy molely it was delicious. But it had enough caffeine to keep the hospital’s Narcolepsy Ward awake for a week. It was 3 am before I finally came down and was able to get some rest, and the caffeine is still bugging my restless limb syndrome today. But some things are worth the price.

Now when it was time to leave work tonight I was spent. Four hours of sleep doesn’t cut it at my age anymore. So I made a decision…no walking to the gym, no workout, no walking to the phones, and no walking to the internet…just rest. And that was the plan – to watch a movie in the room on the computer that I borrowed from a co-worker. Besides that, it’s awful outside. Another dust storm has visited us (got some great pictures of it too this time) and we got a double dose of dust with this one. But as I walked home, I wondered if people would understand why I took the night off, what would I miss by not blogging and working out today, etc. But I went to the room anyway.

Then it happened…I fired up the computer and it told me I was connected to the internet IN MY ROOM! My sweet little 7′x10′ desert hut behind concrete barriers is now connected to the world wide web. Huge morale booster. No more walks at night across post to plop down in the heat to log on. Now Katy and I can video chat with the kids, and I can start getting to bed sooner at night. Yippie.

It ain’t much, but it’s a big surprise to me. Sorry if it’s boring to you guys, but this little twist just made my day.

Also good news was hearing that Steve and Danielle’s wedding went well and Katy has really enjoyed seeing everyone from Wisconsin again. She said it’s like we never left. She got to hear Ben preach and stole a hug from Pastor Bill, and enjoyed the time of worship and hanging out with old friends. When I called earlier she was with Nancy and the kids were having a ball.  So if you’re still reading this thanks for sharing in the little joys of life with us.

Speaking of little joys, I miss mine, especially Grace today. I think of all the hugs and kisses I’ve missed and just wanted to scoop her out of her picture today and love on her awhile. I know Stephen’s OK and doing well…he’s so easy going it’s amazing, though he said on the phone he doesn’t want to have to move again. I can’t see why, he’s only moved five times so far in his life and that’s not counting the times he’s moved temporarily back home with grandparents like now. So please pray that he’ll be happy wherever we end up.

And on that note, it’s time to “end up” and keep my promise to get some rest. Love you guys!

  1. I don’t think it’s boring at all!!! In fact, I think it is very exciting for you! I know any small- even remote- piece of back home comfort must be great!

  2. Thanks for all the uplifting posts. I’m so glad you have interenet in your room. I’m shouting out a big WOOOHOOOOO!!! Sorry I’ve been so silent, but I have been reading everyday and soaking in your faith. Kendle got to call yesterday for the first time and I feel like I can breath again. Hearing his voice sounding so up and confident made my world right side up again. Joe, he loves it. Thank you so much for all your encouragement in the past. He is graduating on August 8 and I can’t wait to tell him in person how proud I am he is my son. I totally understand the pangs of you missing Grace and just wanting to “love on her awhile” Hang in there soldier

  3. Hi Joe –
This is Aaron. How are you doing so far? When Stephen was playing here, he liked playing Star Wars best. How do you get that smiley face onto your computer? I would like to know because I would like to see it on our blog. We will pray for you tonight.
    Love, Aaron
P.S. I like the smiley face.
P.P.S. What are the levels in the army? I mean, levels like your level, Major. And also all the other levels.

  4. Ummm, we’re assuming that the smiley face thing isn’t classified! I’m glad you had a chance to enjoy a nice, sugary, caffeinated, cold beverage. Sorry about the jimmy legs — that’s what we call ‘em at our house. :o )

I’m grateful for any post that has “mundane” details . . . that means there’s nothing dangerous happening today. God bless and protect you and your family tonight.
    Nancy

  5. Not a boring post at all. To me it’s the small details that are the most interesting. I love learning about the base and how everything works and is set up there. How awesome that you have internet in your room. Woo Hoo!!!
